Kurrara Designs Studio for textile and papercraft art is located in the leafy setting of Red Hill, on the Mornington Peninsula, just south of Melbourne, Australia. It’s the perfect place to relax, unwind and be inspired by the surrounding natural bushland. We’ve lived here for over 24 years and I have spent most of those years making textile art for our home, family and friends. I’ve loved sharing what I do both online and face to face with like-minded people.
For the last 10 years or so, Kurrara Designs has been an in-house teaching studio where students could come along and learn creative ways to use their sewing machine or learn how to dye and print their own fabrics with plants, Procion dyes and acrylic paints.
I held weekend workshops for small groups of up to 4 people, which gave them the chance to learn new skills in a fun and friendly environment, with lots of practical hands-on experience. At the end of the course, they got to take home lots of samples and detailed notes to help them forge ahead with their new hobby at home, along with ongoing email and phone support from me, whenever they needed it.
Then along came Covid and everything changed! Everything was shut down for months and months and I think a lot of people realised that having a creative hobby really could help them through a dark time. During Covid, I got more into papercraft art and, working with various groups, I was making and exchanging greetings cards, artist trading cards and hand-made journals to help us through the long months of isolation.
I especially loved going to my studio where I spent hours painting and printing my own art papers that I could use in my projects. From there I decided that I wanted to expand my art practice to include more papercraft work, as it is so enjoyable and therapeutic. It’s something that you can take up and have fun with it at any level.
So, after Covid, we realised we had to change too! We made the decision to stop doing face to face workshops to concentrate on offering online learning content and digital products available in our new store. We invite you to take a look at our new, rebranded website where, in addition to the store, you can also access free content, projects and resources on textile art. Down the track, we will be adding comprehensive online course e-books and videos, which will ultimately include topics covered in my in-house workshops; Natural Dyeing with Plants, Procion Dyeing and Creative Machine Embroidery.
In the store you will find a large number of affordable digital papers for you card makers and paper crafters out there who are looking for something a little bit different and these will be added to on a regular basis.
We hope you enjoy exploring the web site, and that it provides you with some inspiration to take your crafting and sewing skills to new and exciting levels.
